Your itinerary
1. Ljótipollur
Ljótipollur is a magnificent crater-lake surrounded by iron-red mountains. On our way to the Landmannalaugar, we will stop and visit Ljótipollur, to enjoy the views over the lake, and the whole area.
Ljótipollur actually translates to "The ugly pond", which is not doing it any justice!
2. Hike in the Landmannalaugar
In the Landmannalaugar, we chan choose between different hiking paths, with variable difficulties.
Easy option:
Begin with the walk along Laugarhraun. An obsidian filled lava field, offering wonderful panoramas on the whole area, with a very easy path.
At the end of this trail, one can turn left towards Grænagíl. To begin the hike, you will walk, this time, INSIDE the lava field. At the end, we will reach Græanagíl. A green mountain of hydrogeothermally altered rhyolite.
Moderate option:
This would be the same walk as the easy one, with some extra.
Between Laugarhraun and Grænagíl, we will climb to the top of Brennisteinsalda. An organe and red mountain, with a lot of steam vents by its side.
Challenging option:
If you are looking for the best possible views, the most spectacular panoramas, this is the hike that you want to do.
The mountain of Bláhnúkur, is a dark mountain, culminating over all the others. Reaching the top require to walk on its very steep hills, but the reward at the top, is breathtaking.
As we head down, we will also climb Brennisteinsalda, before coming back via Laugarhraun.
3. Sigöldugljúfur
On our way back, we will stop to a magical canyon, sometimes called: Valley of Tears.
Countless waterfalls are majestically falling inside of a long canyon. This magical sight is the perfect way to conclude this tour in the icelandic Highlands.
