Djúpalónssandur is THE black sand beach of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Located in the heart of the National Park of Snæfellsnesjökull, Djúpalónssandur is located right at the edge of an huge lava field, coming from the volcano right behind.
This particular situation, coupled with thousands of years of erosion, creates the most interesting patterns in the cliffs and rocks surrounding the beach. The beach is also rich in history. Scattered all around it are hundreds of rusty remains of an old ship wreck. One will also find some heavy rocks which were used to measure the strength of aspiring fishermen back in the days.
Arnarstapi is sometimes depicted as the most impressive village in Iceland. The shoreline of Arnarstapi is absolutely unique.
Your guide will drop you by the harbour, from where you can see dozens of mountains over the ocean. From there, you will walk all the way to the statue of Bárður, first settler of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. As you walk, you will see stunning rock formations that are shaping the whole coastline of Arnarstapi.
In summer, you will be amazed by the abundance of bird life in the village and on the cliffs.
